Why ABC Fire Extinguishers Are So Common

An ABC fire extinguisher is called a multipurpose extinguisher because it is rated for use on Class A, B, and C fires.

These extinguishers commonly use a dry chemical agent that works by interrupting the chemical reaction of the fire while helping separate the fuel from oxygen.

Because businesses often have a combination of ordinary combustible materials, potential flammable liquids, and electrical equipment, ABC extinguishers are a versatile option for many commercial environments.

What Do the Numbers on a Fire Extinguisher Mean?

You may have noticed numbers before the letters on an extinguisher label, such as 2-A:10-B:C.

Those numbers provide information about the extinguisher's relative fire-extinguishing capability for Class A and Class B fires. A higher rating indicates greater extinguishing capability per square foot for that class of fire.

Class C does not receive a numerical rating because the C designation indicates that the extinguishing agent is suitable for use on energized electrical equipment.
