Fire Extinguisher Services

Required by NFPA 10, Every Year

Once a year, a licensed technician performs a full maintenance inspection of each extinguisher, checking pressure, seals, hose, nozzle, and overall condition before attaching a dated service tag, keeping your records inspection-ready.

Internal Examination & Recharge

Every six years, NFPA 10 requires stored-pressure extinguishers to be emptied and internally examined. We discharge the unit, inspect the cylinder for corrosion, replace worn valve parts and O-rings, then recharge it and return it to service.

Pressure Testing for Dry-Chemical Cylinders

Dry-chemical cylinders require a hydrostatic pressure test every twelve years to confirm the shell can safely contain its charge. We perform the test, document the result, and recharge the unit, replacing any cylinder that does not pass.

Back in Service, Same Visit

A unit must be recharged immediately after any use, even a brief or partial discharge. We empty, refill, and re-pressurize your extinguisher to full ready-to-use condition, and because our technicians carry refill supplies, it goes right back into service.

Hands-On Staff Training

We provide hands-on demonstrations and training for your team on choosing the right extinguisher for the fire and using one safely with the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).

Mounting & Installation

We mount and install extinguishers and cabinets throughout your facility for prompt access in an emergency, setting each unit at the proper height with clear signage and correct spacing to meet NFPA 10 travel distance requirements.

Installation, Inspection & Semi-Annual Testing

Our team handles the setup, modernization, fixing, and twice-yearly servicing of commercial fire protection setups, featuring UL 300 certified kitchen and restaurant hood safety equipment, ensuring your business remains safe and legally compliant every day of the year.

The fire inspector came by and told us we needed our extinguisher serviced, so I called Hedricks and they were able to get someone over within the hour. Turns out my extinguisher wasn't the kind that could be serviced and was old, so they were able to get me a new one of the right kind right then. So friendly, helpful, and quick. Now they will put us on their annual inspection rotation so I won't have to worry about it. They explained everything so well and were so nice about it. Much appreciated!!

Frequently Asked Questions

NFPA 10 sets four intervals: a monthly visual inspection, an annual maintenance examination by a certified technician, a 6-year internal examination for stored-pressure units, and a hydrostatic test every 12 years (every 5 years for CO2, water, and wet chemical types). An extinguisher must also be recharged immediately after any use.

Trained building staff can perform the monthly visual inspections. The annual maintenance, 6-year internal examination, and hydrostatic testing must be performed by a trained and certified technician, which is what our licensed team provides.

The letters are the fire classes the unit is rated for (A, B, C, D, or K). The numbers indicate relative capacity. For example, a 2A:10B:C rating means it has the Class A capacity equivalent to 2.5 gallons of water, can cover 10 square feet of flammable liquid fire, and is safe to use on energized electrical equipment.

The 6-year service is an internal examination: the extinguisher is emptied and opened so the inside of the cylinder can be inspected, then recharged. The 12-year hydrostatic test pressure-tests the cylinder itself to confirm its structural integrity. They are separate requirements that happen on different schedules.

A rechargeable extinguisher can be serviced and kept in use indefinitely as long as it passes its examinations and hydrostatic tests. A non-rechargeable (disposable) unit must be removed from service 12 years after its manufacture date. Any extinguisher with corrosion, damage, or a failed test is condemned and replaced.

It depends on the hazards present. A typical office or retail space uses an ABC dry chemical extinguisher, while a kitchen needs a Class K unit and a server room may call for a CO2 unit. We assess your space, recommend the right types, and place them to meet code. Commercial kitchens also need a fixed UL 300 restaurant fire system alongside the portable Class K extinguisher.
