The fire inspector came by and told us we needed our extinguisher serviced, so I called Hedricks and they were able to get someone over within the hour. Turns out my extinguisher wasn't the kind that could be serviced and was old, so they were able to get me a new one of the right kind right then. So friendly, helpful, and quick. Now they will put us on their annual inspection rotation so I won't have to worry about it. They explained everything so well and were so nice about it. Much appreciated!!

Why Regular Service Matters

A portable extinguisher is the first and fastest response to a small fire and it has to work on the first try. Four things quietly go wrong while it sits on the wall:

Pressure bleeds off

Gauges drift out of the green, leaving the unit unable to discharge.

Dry chemical packs down

Settled powder cakes and clogs the line, so nothing comes out.

Seals fail

Worn seals let the charge escape long before you'd ever notice.

Hidden internal corrosion

Cylinders rust from the inside, where a glance can't catch it.

NFPA 10

The Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers governs all of this, setting a layered schedule of checks monthly, annual, 6-year, and hydrostatic so a problem is caught long before the moment you reach for the handle. We keep your equipment on that schedule and tagged.

Know Your Fire Classes

Not every extinguisher fights every fire, and using the wrong type can make one worse. Extinguishers are rated by the class of fire they're built for:

A

Ordinary combustibles

Wood, paper, cloth, trash, and most plastics

B

Flammable liquids & gases

Gasoline, oil, grease, paint, and solvents

C

Energized electrical equipment

Wiring, panels, motors, and appliances under power

D

Combustible metals

Magnesium, titanium, sodium, and similar metals

K

Cooking oils & fats

Commercial kitchen fryers and griddles

Colors follow common labeling conventions. Many units are rated for more than one class (a typical dry-chemical unit covers A, B, and C), and the numbers on the label indicate relative capacity. Class K kitchens also require a fixed UL 300 system in addition to a portable extinguisher.

Our Fire Extinguisher Services

Our licensed technicians handle the full lifecycle of your extinguishers. Select a service to see what it includes.

Each technician carries both new and refurbished extinguishers, so we can replace a failed or expired unit on the spot rather than leaving a gap in your coverage. Refurbished units are fully serviced and certified to perform like new at a lower cost.

We install extinguishers throughout your facility for prompt access in an emergency, mounting each unit at the proper height with clear signage and correct spacing so every point on the floor stays within the travel distance required by NFPA 10.

We provide hands-on training for your team on choosing the right extinguisher for the fire and using one safely with the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).

Our technicians inspect for low pressure, broken seals, corrosion, and damage, keeping your equipment reliable and your records inspection-ready under NFPA 10.

We offer cost-effective recharge and refill services to extend the life of your existing extinguishers. A unit must be recharged immediately after any use, and we restore yours to full, ready-to-use condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

NFPA 10 sets four intervals: a monthly visual inspection, an annual maintenance examination by a certified technician, a 6-year internal examination for stored-pressure units, and a hydrostatic test every 12 years (every 5 years for CO2, water, and wet chemical types). An extinguisher must also be recharged immediately after any use.

Trained building staff can perform the monthly visual inspections. The annual maintenance, 6-year internal examination, and hydrostatic testing must be performed by a trained and certified technician, which is what our licensed team provides.

The letters are the fire classes the unit is rated for (A, B, C, D, or K). The numbers indicate relative capacity. For example, a 2A:10B:C rating means it has the Class A capacity equivalent to 2.5 gallons of water, can cover 10 square feet of flammable liquid fire, and is safe to use on energized electrical equipment.

The 6-year service is an internal examination: the extinguisher is emptied and opened so the inside of the cylinder can be inspected, then recharged. The 12-year hydrostatic test pressure-tests the cylinder itself to confirm its structural integrity. They are separate requirements that happen on different schedules.

A rechargeable extinguisher can be serviced and kept in use indefinitely as long as it passes its examinations and hydrostatic tests. A non-rechargeable (disposable) unit must be removed from service 12 years after its manufacture date. Any extinguisher with corrosion, damage, or a failed test is condemned and replaced.

It depends on the hazards present. A typical office or retail space uses an ABC dry chemical extinguisher, while a kitchen needs a Class K unit and a server room may call for a CO2 unit. We assess your space, recommend the right types, and place them to meet code. Commercial kitchens also need a fixed UL 300 restaurant fire system alongside the portable Class K extinguisher.
